At age 20 Gabrielle Coco Chanel was first introduced to a higher social class by one of her cavalrymen named Etienne Balsan in the year 1903. She began to draw attention through them as a fashion designer. She designed hats and the higher class women appeared at horse racetracks wearing her hats. This started a lot of magazines to write articles about the new fashion styles.

The gentlemen invited Gabrielle to a local cafe, La Rotonde. Amateurs were invited to sign between shows, and Chanel stepped up on stage one night. According to a tale she started singing about a poor girl that lost her dog, Coco. The crowd was mesmerized by her voice and they started chanting "Coco, Coco!" there forth the name was adopted in use of her short singing career from 1905-1908 and would be known for the rest of her life. There was a short period of time when Gabrielle Coco Chanel performed at clubs in Vichy and Moulins.
